Middle Moselle · Rhineland-Palatinate
The Moselle
Steep slate slopes, tight river loops and almost two thousand years of winegrowing: one of the most beautiful wine regions in Europe.
The Moselle rises in the Vosges mountains and flows 544 kilometres to Koblenz, where it meets the Rhine. Between Trier and Koblenz it cuts tight loops through the slate – and on the steep south-facing slopes above grows one of the finest white wines in the world.
The Romans were already making wine here; Trier was one of their imperial cities, and along the Middle Moselle wine presses and the Neumagen wine ship recall that era. Today the Moselle is Riesling country: light, mineral, with lively acidity – from bone-dry to lusciously sweet.
Around Trittenheim the Middle Moselle is at its most beautiful: small wine villages, vineyards to explore on foot, seasonal wine taverns and a river that winds so tightly you almost see it twice from above.
